Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs) for
Insurance Firms
Insurance firms—whether life, non-life, reinsurance, or intermediaries—are increasingly required to obtain a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) to meet a range of regulatory, operational, and counterparty reporting obligations. The LEI provides a globally recognized and standardized method for identifying legal entities participating in financial transactions.
In a sector where transparency, cross-border compliance, and risk assessment are paramount, the LEI plays a critical role in strengthening regulatory reporting, AML/KYC, and counterparty due diligence.

Solvency II EIOPA GUIDELINES
In Solvency II Directive for example, the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is used to uniquely identify entities falling within its scope. It facilitates data consistency and comparability across different sources, enhancing supervision and risk assessment in the insurance and pensions sectors. The LEI is essential for Solvency II reporting, allowing for better risk analysis and efficient supervision by national authorities and EIOPA
“The LEI rules allow for unambiguous identification of the legal entities mentioned above,
avoiding inconsistency and ambiguity of identification by national codes or by their name.
This categorisation improves the quality and timeliness of aggregated data at EU level and
eventually reduces the reporting burden for reporting entities operating cross-border.”
